Living in a state of nature is great and fun and easy, and, well, natural. You can do what you want when you want and never have to answer to anyone.
Civilization is so much more convenient. You gather everyone together in one area, build stable homes, create a centralized food supply, a sanitation system, public hygiene, education and transportation, health care, and fire departments.
Trick is, though, that if you want to be a part of it, you have to agree to bury all your natural impulses. No, that would be an admission of defeat.
Unthinking angry mobs, stupid violent yahoos, and sinister government forces are standard issue in sci-fi and monster movies. The Gill Man, this deeply tragic and alienated character, the one who remains much more a victim throughout all three films than any of the puny humans he kills, is the one who maintains his dignity to the end, marching into the sea like James Mason in A Star is Born.
In an interesting but irrelevant footnote, in , John Landis was pushing Universal to let him produce a big budget remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon.
He already had Rick Baker signed and ready to do the makeup that would have been based almost bump for bump on the original Gill Man design.
The great Nigel Kneale had agreed to write the script. The psychologist's attempts at communicating with the Gill-man are hampered by his attraction to his student.
The Gill-man breaks free from his tank and escapes into the ocean. It is not long before he begins stalking the ichthyology student and kidnaps her at a boat party.
The Gill-man is soon tracked down by police and again gets shot multiple times, forcing him to flee into the ocean. He again tries to swim away and supposedly dies from his wounds.
After living for a short while in a Florida river, the Gill-man is found again, and after a vicious struggle, is accidentally immolated.
The Gill-man's injuries are so severe that his scales and gills fall off, forcing his captors to perform surgery on him to prevent suffocation.
X-rays on the creature show that he has begun developing a land animal's lung structure, so a tracheotomy is performed, opening an air passage to the lungs, transforming the Gill-man into an air-breathing, nearly human animal.
Dressing him in a suit made of sail cloth, the Gill-man is taken to a California estate, where he is imprisoned within an electric fence.
Though they initially try to integrate the Gill-man into human society, one of its captors frames it for a murder, and the Gill-man ultimately escapes into the ocean.
Producer Gary Ross said in March that the Gill-man's origin would be reinvented, with him being the result of a pharmaceutical corporation polluting the Amazon.
Creature from the Black Lagoon was one of many films featuring the Universal monsters that would have received a reboot as a part of Universal Pictures' Dark Universe.
The series would have brought Universal's monsters into a modern-day setting, beginning with The Mummy Henry Jekyll at Prodigium's base in London and one of the objects has the Gill-man's hand in it.
A geology expedition in the Amazon uncovers fossilized evidence from the Devonian period of a link between land and sea animals in the form of a skeletal hand with webbed fingers.
Expedition leader Dr. Carl Maia visits his friend, Dr. David Reed, an ichthyologist who works at a marine biology institute.
Reed persuades the institute's financial backer, Mark Williams, to fund a return expedition to the Amazon to look for the remainder of the skeleton.
They go aboard a tramp steamer, the Rita , which is captained by a crusty old codger named Lucas. The expedition consists of Dr. Reed, Dr. When they arrive at Dr.
Maia's camp, they discover that his entire research team has been mysteriously killed while he was away. Lucas suggests it was done by a jaguar, but the others are unsure.
The audience is privy to the attack upon the camp, which was committed by a living version of the fossil the scientists seek-curious upon seeing the expedition, the creature investigates the camp site, but its sudden appearance frightens the members, who attack it, whereupon the enraged creature kills them in response.
The excavation of the area where Maia found the hand turns up nothing. Mark is ready to give up the search, but David suggests that perhaps thousands of years ago the part of the embankment containing the rest of the skeleton fell into the water and was washed downriver.
Lucas says that the tributary empties into a lagoon known as the "Black Lagoon," a paradise from which no one has ever returned.
The scientists decide to risk it, unaware that the amphibious "Gill-man" that killed Dr. Maia's assistants earlier has been watching them.
